Can I take glyburide at night for gestational diabetes? I am 32 weeks pregnant and have gestational diabetes. My sugar tended to higher at night. I take 1/2 a pill in the morning. I'm now on this for 2 weeks and my sugar is WACKY. It gets too low now in the morning and now shows more abnormal numbers due to it being too low, and still gets high at night. I tried to explain this to OB/GYN, and they still keep me on in the morning. I'm also trying to adjust my diet. I just would like some opinions on this before the next doc appointment. When I say wacky I mean its too low after I eat breakfast and then high after dinner. Thanks for your responses.

Jill replied: "What do you mean by wacky? And what is "high" and "low" to you? It can be a bit high or low without having serious consequences, and you might not need to change anything. As long as you are describing in detail your symptoms to your doctor and they understand what's happening, I would trust his/her judgement. By taking too much glyburide you could send your sugars dangerously low - and having low blood sugar is FAR more dangerous than it being a little bit high."

quicksilver replied: "Blood sugars tend to fall lower during the night during sleep, and especially in the pre-dawn hours. If you are measuring your sugar after dinner this is not an adequate prediction of how it may be at 3 a.m. Best to follow any doctor's orders on this one."

KT replied: "No, take it in the am. Why? You do not need it to begin it's effects through the night when most people BS drops."

moore_256 replied: "you sugar may be high at night before you go to bed but when your sleeping your body eats up alot of that sugar so to speak so you really don't have much to worry about but if you are still concerned, at your next appt voice your concerns and have your ob explain to you what exactly is going on in your body when you have gestational diabetes. that is what your ob is there for!"

lisalisarussell replied: "maternal diet to END G.D. good luck"

how long for glyburide to relieve symptoms? I have Type II Diabetes(recently diagnosed) and I am taking glyburide 2.5 mg once a day. I have been taking it for about a week now and would like to know for those who have taken it, how long does it take to relieve the symptoms, ie, dry mouth and constant urination? when i asked my doctor she said it would take a while, but i want to know from people who have taken it. any help appreciated. thanks

♦ replied: "one week of taking it should relieve the symptoms...u should check your blood sugar...and see if it is within normal level, if not..re-evaluate ur medication, u might need to combine it with another medication..or u might even need insulin temporarily"

How long does it take for prednisone to get out of your system? I have crohn's disease was put on prednisone for 3 months,40mg a day. My blood sugar started running in the 5 and 6 hundreds, was taking glyburide 2xdaily,i tapered off , its been a month since i took my last dose and stopped the glyburide and my sugars are still in the 2 hundreds..doc says its still the prednisone. how long does it take?

Notyour B replied: "The thing with prednisone is that it has a low clearance (elimination) rate. Most of it (about 76% of each dose) is recycled through the body. And the dose given has to be high because it has low biovailability (not much of it is in blood circulation after absorption by mouth). Complete elimination from your body depends also on the other conditions you might have such as thyroid, kidney or liver deficiency. Long time therapy with high doses of prednisone (or any corticosteroid) will sometimes cause the development of diabetes mellitus. I suggest you talk about this to your doctor. For info on prednisolone and other glucocorticosteroids : "

Has anyone had to use glyburide during gestational diabetes? Does it works for you? Does your baby come out healthy? I am afraid to take this pills because I think will hurt my baby. I know it sound paranoid, but is my first baby and I want him healthy.

Jill P replied: "Yes, I took glyburide for about 8 weeks during my last pregnancy. It worked, along with controlling my diet very carefully, but I did have to keep increasing the dose slowly as the pregnancy advanced. My baby was completely healthy -- in fact, he was 4 weeks early and weighed a full 9 lbs. He is now 10 months old and extremely healthy and active and social. Good luck!"

wondering replied: "if the endocrinologist prescribed it, follow up with your obstetrician also. ask your obgyn! perhaps if you Dont take it,your baby could be born with health issues.jaundice,to large..while organs are inmature, lung issues.so speak to your obgyn asap."

How long does it take for metformin to? How long does it take for metformin to get totally out of your system once you stop taking it? What about 70/30 insulin and glyburide? Thanks.

TheOrange Evil replied: "Metformin takes several days to a week. Insulin gets used up pretty fast by the body. I wouldn't give that more than a day or two. Glyburide lasts a few days, as well. By the end of the week, there should be virtually no residual effects of any of them."

Has anyone ever taken Glyburide for gestational diabetes? I'm 31 weeks pregnant and my doc put me on this medicine to control my blood sugar. Has anyone ever taken it while pregnant? Thanks.

vero replied: "Well sorry idk if my mom did but i know that she would take some pills the doctor gave her when she was pregnat and she also had gestational diabetes."

canada6 replied: "yes very effective . decreasessugar levels caused by stress , nerves anxiety . dont worry you are just having a normal increse due to the above issues . not a diabetic at all . very very good doc"

Beyond swelling of extremities, are there any serious consequences of taking actos and glyburide/metformin? My doctor says I should tough it out. Is there no more serious effect from the swelling? I don't want to put up with this, and find out in a year from now that I have to have my foot cut off!

hktravis07 replied: "I take glyburide and metformin and don't have any swelling, maybe you should check with another doctor...I don't think staying swollen would be good for you."

mark b replied: "i do not no what is wrong with your foot and i am not a doc but i broke my foot years ago and it is still broken i do not have any problem with it expert a limp and i have never taken any thing for it but i am unable to answer your question if i was you go seek advice from a specialist he or she can advise you i all ways try and get 3 opinions before i ever take medication even doctors don't no all the answers and they will ring another for advice if they are not shore it is the same with us if you are not shore seek another opinion from another doc"

johan h replied: "How about seeking out other experts' opinion on that matter...maybe it could give some light there for you to make some sort of decision for yourself...Hey sister, don't worry too much , ok ?"

Robert and Carol K replied: "I have taken actose and metaformin for 6 months now with no swelling of any kind. I would have a 2nd doctor give an opinion. Could be water retention which can be easily controlled in most cases with a very inexpensive med called forisimide."

joanthegrate replied: "Swelling of the feet will not cause you to have a foot cut off. Going barefoot, cutting your foot and getting an infection that won't heal and turns into gangrene may cause you to have your foot cut off. Try wearing support socks to reduce the swelling and stay as active as possible so you keep a good supply of blood going to your feet. If your doctor is concerned about the swelling he will probably order a diuretic but it doesn't sound like he sees a problem at this time."

Tsunami replied: "yes there is sometimes you can feel like you have something like the flu you have to stop taking metformin. then you get to the doctor has to do with liver. i forget the glyburide also is one that you have to watch sugar may go down fast and its quick acting. i take all of those and have blood taking all the time. by what does he mean tough it out? hey if he is speciliast and he would lose a leg will he tough it out if you lose one? i think you need a new doctor huh?"

Is Glyburide good for gestational diabetes? Are there side-effects to be weary of? We are two weeks out, and the doctor is concerned our unborn's blood sugar level will be too high when she is born. They have suggested Glyburide, which can be orally ingested for the next two weeks. We are reluctant to use drugs that are "new" at this late stage, knowing full well that in a few years a study could come out showing harmful effects. However, there is a risk of seizures and other things (we are told), at birth. Would appreciate any feedback from parents who took Glyburide. We are anti-drug, so no lectures please, but have been told this does not pass the placenta. Experienced views appreciated.

Ironball replied: "Glyburide is a safe medication. It controls the blood sugar with NO side effects. I have been on Glyburide for 5 years."

Jennifer replied: "I took it with my last pregnancy it helped a lot with my gestational diabetes. Which made it easier to stabilize my babies blood sugar when she was born. There are no long term studies on whether its safe or not for pregnant women but they know for sure that not getting your blood sugar under control is bad for the baby. I would definitely recommend it. When we had my son I wasn't given glyburide he ended up having a very scary delivery and first week because of the problems my blood sugar caused."

Shelly S replied: "I have gestational diabetes and am 36 weeks pregnant. My Dr. prescribed Glyburide to control my sugars and it worked so well I went hypoglycemic. They then told me to stop taking it and my sugars have been better ever since. I think it kick started my insulin or helped clear enough of my cells to be receptive of insulin (It's been three weeks without the pills!) Go to Glyburide.com and you will find a few forums to post your question on as well. In all of my research it seemed the greatest risk to baby was having high blood sugar, getting overweight before birth and making delivery worse. good luck!"
